In a world where social media dominates our daily lives, the idea of disconnecting can seem daunting. Yet, stepping away from the digital realm can open doors to real-life adventures that enrich our experiences and create genuine connections.
I was first introduced to social media when I was in only Year 8. It was the years of MySpace, BBM and Facebook. Then Instagram came along. By 16, I was exposed to so many different platforms ultimately designed to hook us in and make money from using up our time. Let us remember, we do not pay for the apps- so the way they make money is in our own living, breathing moments- our time, our consciousness. I will go into this another time.
At that time, no one knew the impacts it would be having to our brains. However, I turn 30 in a few months time and I knew that now was the time to quit completely. I, weirdly, am excited about turning 30. I have started to feel like I know myself more now- and want to go into my 30's be completely myself without 'influencers' secretly telling me to buy certain products or being fed fake AI videos of goodness knows what.
I want you to follow my social media free journey- as I am going to be social media free forever. I say 'am' and not 'may be' because I am setting a clean boundry for myself. This is it. It is time. Through the lows and the highs. I also will be posting about all sorts of other things- from writing, to gardening, and to places I have visited along the way! I also have a LOT of pets- so expect to see them pop up now and then! This blog is my intentional step away from the noise of algorithms and the constant pressure of social media trends. Here, in my own quiet corner of the digital world, I write purely for the joy of it—sharing unfiltered thoughts on the books that shape us, the wild landscapes that ground us, and the freedom found when we finally look up from our screens.
The only apps I use now that could still class as social media are Youtube and Pinterest. Youtube, because it is the only platform where there are people who are going through the same journey and documenting it, I will post about their channels later. Pinterest, for creative ideas. It is great to help you with your drawing, painting or even decorating your house! It is also not addictive, not for me any way. Some people find Youtube addictive however I am lucky that that has never been the case for me.
I have used every excuse in the book not to get rid of it. Here are some:
'I am self employed- I need it for work.'
'I need it to communicate with friends abroad.'
'I have FOMO.'
'I won't get my celebrity news!'
'How will I know when my favourite shows are coming out?'
The list goes on and on- and in future posts- I will tell you how I combat every little voice in my head saying it isn't possible (as well as outside influence saying it is not possible!)
What inspired me to start this blog is how little blogs there are about it-I have only ever come across one or two bloggers that have wrote about being offline and stayed offline. A lot of people have had small detoxes and gone back online- but what about the people who want to stay off? Who really struggle? I have felt so stupid over the years for feeling this way- but I believe many people feel this way- trapped. But they are too scared to tell any one- because no one talks about it. It's the 'normal' now people say. 'You just need to go with the times.' No. We do not.

The Impact of Social Media on Our Lives
Social media platforms have become integral to how we communicate, share, and consume information. While they offer numerous benefits, such as staying connected with friends and family, they can also lead to negative consequences:
Mental Health Issues: Studies show that excessive social media use can contribute to anxiety, depression, and feelings of inadequacy. The constant comparison to others can create unrealistic expectations and diminish self-esteem.
Reduced Face-to-Face Interactions: As we spend more time online, we may neglect in-person relationships. This can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness, despite being "connected" virtually.
Distraction and Decreased Productivity: Social media can be a significant distraction, pulling our attention away from tasks and responsibilities. This can hinder our ability to focus and be productive in our daily lives.
Recognizing these impacts is the first step toward making a change. By disconnecting from social media, we can reclaim our time and mental well-being.
Benefits of Disconnecting
Choosing to step back from social media can lead to numerous benefits:
Improved Mental Health
Taking a break from social media can significantly improve your mental health. Without the constant barrage of curated images and updates, you can focus on your own life and experiences. This shift can lead to increased self-acceptance and a more positive outlook.
Enhanced Relationships
When you disconnect from social media, you create space for deeper, more meaningful interactions with those around you. Engaging in face-to-face conversations fosters genuine connections and strengthens relationships.
Increased Productivity
Without the distractions of social media, you may find yourself more focused and productive. This newfound time can be used to pursue hobbies, learn new skills, or tackle projects you've been putting off.
Opportunities for Adventure
Stepping away from the screen opens up a world of possibilities. You may find yourself more inclined to explore your surroundings, try new activities, or embark on spontaneous adventures.
Practical Tips for Disconnecting
If you're ready to disconnect from social media, here are some practical steps to help you make the transition:
Set Clear Goals
Before you begin, define your reasons for disconnecting. Are you looking to improve your mental health, spend more time with loved ones, or explore new hobbies? Having clear goals will help you stay motivated.
Gradual Reduction
Instead of quitting cold turkey, consider gradually reducing your social media usage. Start by limiting your time on platforms or designating specific days for social media use. This approach can make the transition feel less overwhelming. (This worked best for me. Cold turkey DID NOT.)
Find Alternatives
Replace the time you would typically spend on social media with other activities. Consider reading, exercising, or engaging in creative pursuits. Finding fulfilling alternatives will help you fill the void left by social media.
Inform Your Circle
Let your friends and family know about your decision to disconnect. This way, they can support you and understand why you may not be as responsive online. (Expect the odd snide comment, and hold your ground! My personal favourite: 'Only kids get addicted to their phones.' - Urgh!)
Reflect on Your Experience
Take time to reflect on how disconnecting from social media impacts your life. Keep a journal to document your thoughts and feelings throughout the process. This reflection can help reinforce your decision and highlight the benefits of your new lifestyle.
Embracing Real-Life Adventures
Once you've disconnected from social media, you'll likely find yourself more open to real-life adventures. Here are some ideas to inspire your journey:
Explore Nature
Nature offers countless opportunities for adventure. Whether it's hiking, biking, or simply taking a walk in the park, spending time outdoors can rejuvenate your spirit. Consider visiting local trails, national parks, or botanical gardens to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.
Try New Hobbies
Disconnecting from social media provides the perfect opportunity to explore new hobbies. Consider taking up photography, painting, or gardening. Engaging in creative activities can be incredibly fulfilling and help you discover new passions.
Attend Local Events
Check out local events in your community, such as farmers' markets, art fairs, or concerts. These gatherings are a great way to meet new people and experience the vibrant culture of your area.
Travel
If possible, plan a trip to a new destination. Traveling allows you to experience different cultures, cuisines, and landscapes. Whether it's a weekend getaway or an extended vacation, exploring new places can be a transformative experience.
Volunteer
Consider giving back to your community by volunteering. Helping others can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Look for local organizations that align with your interests and values.
Conclusion
Disconnecting from social media can be a liberating experience that opens the door to real-life adventures. By taking the time to explore the world around you, you can improve your mental health, strengthen relationships, and discover new passions.
As you embark on this journey, remember to embrace the opportunities that come your way. The world is full of adventures waiting to be explored, and all it takes is a little courage to step away from the screen and dive into life. So, take that first step today and see where your adventures lead you.
